Step Through the Wardrobe: A Narnia-Inspired Book Nook
Like many other millennials, the Chronicles of Narnia holds a special place in my heart due to the movies released in the 2000s. As a child, the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe movie absolutely enchanted me. I was incredibly jealous of the adventures the Pevensie children got to have in Narnia. I do have to say that the movie made Turkish Delight seem much more tasty than it actually is. Anyways, back to the nook! After seeing a miniature wardrobe online, I was instantly hit with the idea to create the Narnia wardrobe. I stopped working on my Harry Potter book nook and refocused on Narnia.
To create this piece, I purchased a doll house wardrobe. I cut out the back wall and added some embellishment to the front. The lion head is, of course, a reference to Aslan. The tree on the front of the wardrobe is a reference to the silver bark apple tree. Inside, there is naturally a lamppost! This piece was also my first foray into lighting and programming. I was pretty particular with the 4 different settings. Believe it or not, there are major differences between flickering, twinkling, and sparkling! One aspect of this nook that I really love is the depth effect. As the path goes further back into the nook, the trees and lights get smaller. Many people often comment to me how it looks like the piece is much bigger on the inside! Way in the back of the nook is the witch Jadis’ castle as well as some snow covered mountains.
What’s next?
I actually have plans to rework this piece! I am currently 3D modeling a new wardrobe that I hope will be much more exciting and easier for me to work with. I also plan to upgrade the castle to a 3D printed model rather than just paper. I’m experimenting with using mirrors to make the forest look bigger. Keep an eye on my social media and blog to see when I get back to working on this one!
